Peace activists commemorate 80th anniversary of atomic bombing in Hiroshima
Early Wednesday, August 6, morning in Japan’s western city of Hiroshima, a handful of peace activists gather along the banks of the Motoyasu River, singing songs of pacifism.
Across the river, stands the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome - a physical reminder of the bombing 80 years ago on this day that resulted in the deaths of 140,000 people, when the bomb fell at exactly 8:15 a.m. The activists bowed their heads and observed a moment of silence to mark the moment.
Among the choir of peace activists was 80-year-old Yasuyo Yamane, who was born around one month after the atomic bombing.
